#03 Happiness Restaurant & Cafe at 184 Choa Chu Kang Ave 1 Shop House

Hi, this is Stephanie. This is an introduction to Happiness Restaurant & Cafe located at 184 Choa Chu Kang Ave 1, along the Shop Houses. This is my personal favourite tzi char location with my family and close friends. 

My family and I had been dining here since 4 years ago as our 1st idea dinner location in mind always. I started bringing friends along since my 21st birthday post-celebration when a bill of 11 dishes for 11 people came up to $89 only!

I knew this is the best spot for tzi char since the launch of Budget Tummies.

Now, bringing you a great dinner for 3..

 How the tzi char store looked like (: 

Fastest direction there to Choa Chu Kang Ave 1 Shop Houses:
  •  6mins bus ride
  • Take bus 172 from Choa Chu Kang MRT station 
  •  Bus fare: $0.71 on ezlink card..



These are the 3 dishes for 3 people!


A total of $25.50 for this 3 dishes, ideal for 3 person!
One person pays only $8.50!






1st. Papaya Peanut Pork Rib Soup 
(Soup of the day)

Some tips for tzi char below $10:
  1. Choose the no. of dishes according to the number of diners.
  2. The more the people, the more dishes you can order
  3. Check the serving size; order smallest share yet sufficient
  4. Avoid ordering seafood; almost impossible to fit below $10
  5. Check with servers for discounts :D

#1 一家南村海鲜 Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restaurant 21 Toa Payoh Lorong 7

Hi! Firstly, we would like to thank you all for being so supportive of Budgetummies, liking our various social media pages. If you still haven’t do so, what are you waiting for! 


Don’t forget, every week, a lucky reader gets to recommend us a place and we will critique the food for you!(and we will create an e-invite for our readers to participate in the event!)
Every week, Budgetummies will be featuring a meal not costing more than $10 per person. For readers who are not familiar with the culture here, Tzi-char literally means “cook and fry”. It serves a wide variety of Chinese food with steamed rice.

It is our first blog post, are you all curious if we will manage to hit the targeted amount of $10 and below? Read on to find out more!

This week’s Tzi-char location is in between Braddel MRT and Toa Payoh MRT station. We chose to alight at Braddell MRT station.

Seeing Kim Keat Palm, we knew we had finally reached the place after 15 minutes of travelling by foot.  

 Here we are at the destination! However, there was a problem. This place is highly saturated with lots of Tzi-char stalls. We had a tough time deciding which stall to patronize. 

“Should we try out this place?”
“Sigh, they all look so appetising. I’m so hungry”



Finally, we settled down at 一家南村海鲜 Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restaurant, because their unique dishes in the menu attracted us!

A note to our readers: You may want to visit this place during off-peak hours, because you may wait for up to an hour due to the immense popularity of the store.
We were fortunate to avoid the crowd as we reached the place at 5pm.

We made our orders(a total of 5 dishes!) and were patiently waiting for our food

The food didn't take long to arrive, and we were busy filling our stomachs.

The first dish that was served: Seafood Soup
When the dish was served to us, we were surprised to see such a big serving for the seven of us! There was a lot of seafood in the soup, just like what the name mentions. The ingredients are carrot, tomatoes, cabbage, tou fu(silken beancurd), ginger, butter mushrooms, prawns and fish with a some pepper on top.










The second dish that was served: Hotplate Tou Fu
The ingredients are carrot, snow peas, corn and egg tou fu with a generous serving of gravy on the top.






The third dish that was served: Sambal Kang Kong





The fourth dish that was served: Melon with Prawn Balls
The ingredients are half of a rock melon, deep fried balls with prawn stuffing coated with honey, finished off with sesame seeds at the top.   





The last dish that was served: Fried Strawberry Chicken
The ingredients are the fried chicken, the strawberry fruit with a splash of pink creamy sauce at the top.
